Food to Boost Your Immune System

By now, most people’s life’s have been affected in some way by coronavirus (COVID-19). It is important to take all the necessary steps to reduce our exposure and follow government and health guidelines.

In addition, there are certain foods that can help support your immune system to ensure it is as strong as possible.

Ginger, garlic and turmeric all help produce heat in the body.  When our body is cold inside and our circulation is low, our immune system is compromised.

Ways to help strengthen your body:

  1. Boil fresh ginger, scrubbed, not peeled, for several hours in water to make a warming tea.  This can be drunk with honey or turmeric.  This powerful tea warms your throat and chest in particular.
  2. Add garlic and onions to your cooking every day.
  3. Turmeric is best absorbed in combination with black pepper and a little oil.  You can make a warm drink combining these with almond milk (or an equivalent.)
  4. Drink warm water rather than cold drinks.
  5. Onions and salt are effective at removing toxins from your system.  Use natural salt, Himalayan salt, rather than table salt. Avoid using raw onions that have been left cut
  6. Gargle salty water regularly, especially if you have a sore throat or dry cough.
  7. Try drinking water with a little salt dissolved in it.

When staying indoors, it is important to take steps to keep up your circulation to defend against or to fight off a virus:

  • Try to keep a window open as a source of oxygen.
  • Exercise regularly until you sweat, even indoors.

Supporting your immune system can help you recover more quickly from viral infection and even prevent them.

I’m living a healthy lifestyle but I still feel tired

Many of my clients cannot understand why they still feel tired when they are living a healthy lifestyle.

Why do I feel tired all the time?

There can be many factors but our changing natural environment does not help.

Many people live in cities where food, water and air are of a low quality, which means they do not contain enough energy for our daily needs.

The air quality means there is less oxygen; the food we consume has been treated with pesticides and has less nutrients; the water we drink has less energy because of the chemical processes.

We therefore have to raid our own energy store which is often causing the battery to go flat.

What happens when we are low on energy?

Our kidneys are mostly affected by this energy shortage. In the West, the kidneys are viewed as the filtration organ. In the East they are viewed as the organ that controls the water energy to keep the body cool.

They also store our original energy (Qi) and are responsible for supplying ‘reserve’ energy to any other organ running low on Qi. As the kidneys become less able to fulfil their energetic role, we feel an overwhelming sense of tiredness as the battery is flat.

Signs that your kidneys are low in energy

As well as feeling generally tired, there are other signs that your kidneys are low in energy:

  1. If you are craving salt or a salty snack – the taste that corresponds to and supports the kidney is salt.
  2. If you are experiencing ear problems such as infections, tinnitus or deafness it may be a sign that your kidney’s energy needs support.
  3. If you have bone-related issues such as osteoporosis, then your kidney’s energy may be low.
  4. Severe panic attacks, anxiety and fear can also be a sign that your kidney energy is not balanced.

Foods to support kidney health

Bone broth, seafood or any type of bean (e.g. black beans) support the kidneys. Our beef seaweed soup will help give the kidneys a boost – the recipe is here.

Acceptance and how to deal with stress

A harmonious mind flows like water. If we hit an obstacle and we can’t find a natural way round it, then stress is created. So, how to deal with stress? In order to avoid stress, we have to first accept the obstacle.

How the mind works

In life, if your mind doesn’t like something it has to work very hard to digest it. It then has to understand the meaning and purpose of the experience by consciously or subconsciously assimilating the lessons learned and eliminating what is harmful. Every experience in life follows this process, but many people struggle with acceptance and letting go.

Four ways to avoid blockages in the mind

1. Acceptance and elimination

Acceptance is to allow things to be, while elimination is to let go of painful memories. We often hold onto many unpleasant memories that are difficult to let go of. However, whatever we go through, we must accept it first. Rejection will create a blockage.

2. Positive thoughts

Every thought is transmitted to the body through the energy system and every thought carries energy. A positive thought allows the energy to flow freely through the body, and a negative thought blocks the flow of energy. This will eventually affect the functioning of the main organs in the body.

3. Open energy blockages in the body to free the mind

We can only access the mind through the body. By opening energy blockages in the body, it allows you to clear out deep-seated blockages in the mind.

4. Accept things with an open heart

Once we accept what life throws at us with an open heart we can move with life’s movement, which is both up and down. This also mirrors how Qi energy flows in the body.

If we can avoid blockages in the mind, we will be able to better deal with stress. The first step is to address is your Qi, or energy levels and energy blockages. Please get in touch to arrange an assessment or try our Energy Classes.

Recharge in mind and recharge in body

Can you recharge your mind and recharge your body?

I meet many people who outwardly seem to have a lot of energy and find it difficult to slow down. They will often hear advice from friends, family and colleagues such as ‘you need to take it easy’, ‘you can’t do everything’, ‘you shouldn’t work the hours you do’, ‘you can’t solve everyone’s problems’.

This type of person often experiences a kind of frenetic energy where sitting still is difficult, no matter how tired they are. Their energy keeps going, with their minds constantly working and their bodies racing to keep up. After a while it all becomes very exhausting.

In this scenario, my advice is not to slow down but to recharge and calm the mind – that in turn will recharge the body.

Read Emily’s story:

“I could never sit still and I often felt like a spinning top that is still spinning long after the initial energy burst. I was always looking for the next thing to do long before I’d finished what I was currently doing. I also found it difficult to say no as I felt I could keep going and going. There comes a point, though, when that energy is going to run out. The mind can no longer work effectively and the body can develop physical symptoms.

Since I began my first treatment with Master Oh, I have discovered peace and quiet. After my first treatment, I was suddenly able to sit down and enjoy a cup of tea without thinking or planning to do anything. I could finish the last sip and still sit a while longer. After a treatment, I could go to bed and fall asleep with a calm and empty mind and then wake up with a clear mind that is happy to start the day. This was a whole new experience for me. Normally, I fell asleep with exhaustion as I was trying to work through many things in my head and I woke up after many dreams, tired and a bit anxious about starting all the things I need to do.

Master Oh and Sun Kyeong practitioners use acupressure, so it softens all those knots that seem to build up so quickly around my shoulders, neck, lower and upper back. I can normally feel my breathing improve and my body relaxes naturally as they press and relieve the tension all over my body. I normally can’t relax just by lying down. The sounds seem to quieten my mind. I feel more energised, my body feels lighter, my mind feels more balanced and calm. Everyone around has noticed I am calmer and I have more time and patience for others – which I think makes me a better person. Thank you!”

Recharge your energy with an energetic treatment

The reason Emily felt such an improvement and essentially slowed down after energy treatments is that they rebalanced her energy levels. Frenetic energy is bursts of energy that draw on energy reserves often, produced from a ‘fright or flight’ reaction, resulting in the production of adrenaline. This is not a sustainable energy supply.

The treatments had the benefit of unblocking energy channels that were affecting the natural flow of energy in the body. When energy is flowing effectively, the mind is calmer and more balanced. Once the mind is recharged, the body will follow.

How does Yin and Yang affect Qi (Energy)?

How does Yin and Yang affect Qi (Energy)?

The human body is a conductor of energy. We have hundreds of energy channels running through the body, delivering Qi in support of our physical, mental and spiritual functions.

Yin and yang have to be perfectly balanced but what is yin and yang?

Yang energy

Yang energy (positive energy) from the universe enters through the top of the head and flows downwards through the heart, gathering in the lower energy centre (tantien).

Yin energy

Yin (negative energy) from the earth and enters the body through the soles of the feet and travels up through the legs, through the kidneys, cooling the heart and then into the lower energy centre (tantien).

This energy centre supports the body. It is where yin and yang meet to create Qi energy.

The energy centre (tantien)

The energy centre or tantien has a specific purpose.

The lower tantien controls all physical functions in the body – especially digestion, reproduction and circulation. If the lower tantien, for example, is blocked, this balance is disrupted as yang will flow up, creating excess heat – resulting in conditions like high blood pressure, asthma, heart disease and migraine. Yin then falls downwards, creating excess cold in the legs, reducing circulation.

Physical blockages occur as we ingest the wrong food or work long, stressful hours. Pollution from our environment also clogs our energy meridian system.

The middle tantien controls all mental activity, emotions and feelings. The mind is here.

The mind can create blockages. Our emotions, thoughts and feelings also interfere with energy circulation. These blockages are more subtle and therefore more difficult to open than physical blockages.

The upper tantien controls all spiritual characteristics of the human being. It is our connection with the source of life.

When the mind is clear, then Qi can flow freely and support the body.

If you find that you have any of the symptoms mentioned, you may be experiencing a mental or physical blockage. Please get in touch to arrange an assessment.

Constant tiredness led to more serious health issues – Mel’s story

Moments of extreme tiredness as well as a constant feeling of exhaustion are symptoms of low energy that can lead to chronic fatigue. This is Mel’s story which charts her struggles with chronic and post viral fatigue, the resulting depression and her quest to find a solution to put her health back on track.

This is Mel:

Mel Hillyard was a successful theatre director for 10 years before she encountered chronic fatigue. It started with a series of illnesses that left her feeling permanently exhausted. These symptoms were in fact warning signs that she was running out of energy. The tank was effectively empty.

This led to years of illness – each one more serious than the last. As her body tried to fight them, it was further depleting what little energy she had left. And so the vicious cycle continued. During this time she tried every alternative approach possible, given that traditional medicine in the West knew how to treat the symptoms but not the underlying cause.

Here, Mel talks to us about her experience:

I loved my job working as a theatre director. It was rewarding and I was so driven and focused. But it required a lot of energy and my health was suffering profoundly. I put it down to burning the candle at both ends as I was working and socialising non-stop.

What was the first sign of things not being right?

I first got glandular fever. Over the subsequent 9 years I rarely felt well or fully energised. I realised later that I had post viral fatigue. I had recurring tonsillitis for 2 years, and then proceeded to get chronic stomach problems – which I finally found out was due to the collapsed lining of my gut and 2 parasites I picked up in India. It felt like I ́d just manage to overcome one thing and I’d be hit by something else.

Had you heard of post viral fatigue and and constant tiredness?

At the time, no, as it’s not really referred to by our doctors. I just knew that I was repeatedly catching viruses that couldn’t be treated by conventional western medicine and that left me feeling very low. When I booked an appointment with my GP, we’d talk about the symptoms but never really about the underlying cause.

How did you cope?

I just tried to push through and pretend I was ok as I didn’t want to seem like I was always ill which made me feel weak and incapable. Putting on a brave face was in itself exhausting.

I couldn’t understand why most of my friends and colleagues seemed to be fine after a night out, where as it would wipe me out for days. My work was full on and I couldn’t miss it, so my social life struggled and I found myself more and more unable to make basic social events, as all I wanted to do was rest and sleep. I became depressed, anxious, sad and frustrated as I tried to find more and more alternative therapies to help me, after conventional medicine and antibiotics had made me so much worse.

How far would you go to stop being tired all the time?

I think my soul was searching spiritually to connect with something deeper and I was desperate for help physically too. Over the course of six years I tried every alternative approach: reiki, acupuncture, bowen technique, osteopaths, massage, meditation, cacao ceremonies, fire ceremonies, channelling, amongst many other things. All of these therapies had various stages of effect and some alleviated the symptoms a little – but nothing worked for more than a few months. The physical pain, exhaustion, immunity problems and anxiety always came back.

Finally, out of sheer desperation and determination to make a change in my physical, mental and spiritual health, I travelled to Peru for two weeks to take a herbal plant medicine called Ayahuasca – in the middle of the amazon jungle. This plant medicine is supposed to clean you physically, mentally and spiritually and looking back I realise how desperate I was, as it was quite an extreme thing to do. I think something was forcing me to seek help, and amongst all the pain, I knew somewhere deep down that it didn’t have to be like this. I did feel better after the trip to Peru, but again the problems came back a couple of months later.

How did you find out about energy treatments?

I was at the Om Yoga Show with my mum when I came across a stand advertising ‘energy treatments’. I was instantly drawn to it and as I walked closer I saw a calm looking practitioner in a white tunic pressing along different points of a man’s body whilst making a powerful ‘sh’ sound. The man he was treating stood up from the massage table smiling and looking refreshed. He said his whole body felt so much lighter. I decided to have a go and try a treatment with the practitioner, Master Oh. I have never looked back since, it completely changed my life.

In spite of feeling constantly tired over the last decade, I hadn’t really made the connection that I was feeling low because I didn’t have any energy. The only way I thought about re-energising was from a good night sleep or from a high-energy meal (neither of which worked because most food made me feel heavy and bloated).

It was only after trying an Energy Treatment with Master Oh that I realised how desperately my body needed energy. Master Oh explained that the energy my body needed was not the energy we absorb from food and water but the innate energy we are born with, which is like our battery. In the East they call this energy ‘Qi’.

How did you find the energy treatments?

As soon as I saw Master Oh I could feel a sense of love and power emitting from him. Somehow I felt that I was safe in his presence. I knew I had to have a treatment with him.

It took a few seconds to relax into the treatment, as it was something I had never experienced before. Then I began to feel the energy flowing through my body. It was absolutely transformational. The treatment was a mixture of pressing different acupressure points on the body, with a breathing technique to make a sound. This helps the energy penetrate deep into the energy channels. I was very blocked so my stomach hurt when it was pressed, but it felt like ‘good’ pain.

As Master Oh kept working on these points I felt them release and eventually they weren’t painful anymore. At the end of the treatment I felt a huge sense of relief, my whole body felt stronger and lighter – and my mind was crystal clear. I hadn’t felt that for years.

I immediately booked more treatments. Over the coming weeks, as I visited Master Oh, my bloating disappeared, I started to lose weight effortlessly, I stopped catching colds and viruses and the most amazing thing, I started to feel energised, motivated and with a new sense of happiness, which I felt was coming out from deep inside.

How did the treatment affect your symptoms of fatigue?

After the first treatment with Master Oh I began to feel more energised. At first the effects lasted a few days but as i continued with weekly treatments, the effects started to last much longer. I remember suddenly realising how much more energy I had to do things. I no longer felt like I was dragging my body across London. My capacity to cope with external things changed too. I felt myself becoming more enthusiastic about life in general, like I was finding my old self again. I was amazed at how quickly the change had happened.

During the sessions he helped me to understand myself better. He explained how energy in the human body works and how we are all born with the same essence, which is ‘clear, bright and beautiful’ but that as we go through life, we create energy blockages with our mind and emotions. He also explained about how energy blockages in the family can be passed down to the next generation as inherited energy patterns. It was fascinating to hear him speak and to see how much he could tell me about myself. Everything he said made sense.

After a course of 5 weekly energy treatments, Master Oh recommended I take part in Qi energy classes – these are a mixture of chanting, movements and meditation, to harness and circulate the power of ‘Qi’. I loved the classes too, as I was able to feel myself moving the energy in my body. After a class and a treatment, my mind would be clear and I could feel my energy coming back – I remember thinking “ah this is what it ́s like to feel normal and healthy”. Every time I left the centre, my body felt light and I felt positive and happy. It was almost like I was walking on clouds.

I now understand that energy comes from our own natural source, and that I had deep blockages that I needed to clear, which were both inherited and built up from my life.

I feel so much gratitude for Master Oh. I have never in my life met anyone like him. The energy that Master Oh can give is so powerful and his connection and trust in the Source is so profound. He also has such a deep love for people – not in a ‘showy way’, but deeply felt.

I can feel this during an energy treatment with Master Oh – my whole body feels alive and well.

Living with Anxiety

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a feeling of unease, worry or fear which, when persistent and impacting on daily life may be a sign of an anxiety disorder.

Anxiety disorders can be hard to pick up on and can sometimes be dismissed.  An occasional feeling of anxiety, particularly about events or challenging situations, is normal and extremely common. However, if feelings of anxiety regularly cause significant distress or they start to impact on your ability to carry out your daily life, for example withdrawing or avoiding contact with friends and family, feeling unable to go to work, or avoiding places and situations…then it may be a sign of an anxiety disorder.

Symptoms

Symptoms of anxiety include changes in thoughts and behaviour such as:

  • Restlessness
  • A feeling of dread
  • A feeling of being “on-edge”
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Irritability

It can also involve physical feelings such as:

  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Heart palpitations (a noticeably strong, fast heartbeat)
  • Sweating
  • Shortness of breath
  • Headache
  • Dry mouth.

Types of Anxiety Disorder

There are different types of anxiety disorder, each of which will have slightly different symptoms and treatment. Some examples of anxiety disorders include:

  • Generalised Anxiety Disorder
  • Panic Disorder (regular sudden attacks of panic or fear)
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Social Anxiety Disorder
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Specific Phobias (overwhelming and incapacitating fear of a specific object, place, situation or feeling)

Causes

There are many different factors that may contribute to the development of anxiety – genetic, psychological and social factors. Anxiety is often triggered by poor underlying health which may be a symptom of a lack of energy in our body which in turn, supports our nervous system.  Our mind is the most important tool we have, and learning to control it and make our thoughts more positive can make a big difference. However, sometimes we still need to seek help from other sources.

How Master Oh Can Help

Anxiety can be alleviated at different levels by calming the mind and the body, and providing our nervous system with energy, or Qi, which is our own sustainable energy.

As part of Master Oh’s consultation and treatment, he looks at the deeper issues, highlighting the subconscious patterns at play, and then guiding you to think and act in a different way.  He is also able to pick up inherited energy patterns which influence your own levels of energy within your system. Master Oh has an innate sense of what is the root cause of the problem – on a physical, emotional and spiritual level.

Master Oh’s Energy Treatments are a powerful combination of acupressure and sound, which help to open the energy channels and improve the flow of ‘human energy’ – Qi. Qi is responsible for the communication between all cells, organs and systems in the body. It is vital to our wellbeing, relieving physical and emotional pain, increasing vitality and enhancing the body’s self-healing capacity.

With his sensitive touch, Master Oh can feel how energy is circulating in your body and where it is blocked. He is also able to assess your energy reserves. He then works on your entire body, applying gentle acupressure on the main energy points to release blockages, clear toxins and recharge your energy system. Throughout the treatment he uses a breathing technique to make a sound vibration that transmits Qi deep into the energy channels. After the treatment, many people experience relief from pain, stress and anxiety, as well as a new sense of calm, lightness and increased mental clarity.

5 Simple Steps to Maintain Your Mental Health

World Mental Health Day last week did a great job in raising awareness of an issue that has been difficult to talk about, but mental health is an everyday issue and in this blog we look at how our energy levels can affect mental health.

Master Oh knows that in our fast paced world, we are more affected by the stresses of everyday life because we are disconnected from our original energy source, Qi. This means that we find it difficult to recharge and to re-energise. This lack of energy can lead to serious health issues including our mental health.

In this blog, we look into simple steps that can be taken in order to re-energise to regain our health and achieve a peaceful and clear mind.

First, let’s go back to the beginning…

What Is Mental Health?

Mental health refers to our cognitive, behavioural, and emotional wellbeing – it is all about how we think, feel, and behave. Some people call mental health ‘emotional health’ or ‘well-being’ and it’s just as important as good physical health.

If you’re in good mental health, you can:

  • Make the most of your potential
  • Cope with life
  • Play a full part in your family, workplace, community and among friends.

We all have times when we feel down or stressed or frightened. Most of the time those feelings pass, but sometimes they develop into a more serious problem and that could happen to any one of us.

There’s a stigma attached to mental health problems, people feel uncomfortable about them and don’t talk about them much. But it’s healthy to know and say how you’re feeling.

What Are Mental Health Problems?

Mental health problems range from the worries we all experience as part of everyday life to serious long-term conditions. The majority of people who experience mental health problems can overcome them or learn to live with them, especially if they address them early on. If someone is experiencing mental health issues, they may experience the following:

  • Withdrawing from people or activities they would normally enjoy.
  • Sleeping or eating too much or too little.
  • Feeling as if nothing matters.
  • Consistently low energy.
  • Using ‘escape’ methods e.g  drinking more than normal
  • Displaying uncharacteristic emotions.
  • Confusion
  • Not being able to complete standard tasks, such as getting to work or cooking a meal.
  • Not being able to cope with emotions e.g frequent crying, anger etc.

What is Good Mental Health?

By contrast, if you have good mental wellbeing you generally feel positive and clear minded and you are able to:

  • Feel relatively confident in yourself and have positive self-esteem
  • Feel and express a range of emotions
  • Build and maintain good relationships with others
  • Feel engaged with the world around you
  • Live and work productively
  • Cope with the stresses of daily life
  • Adapt and manage in times of change and uncertainty

Energy levels (Qi) and Mental Health

We humans have three main energy centres:

1. Spirit

The top one is in charge of our spirit and this is what allows us to make the right decisions. When we have enough Qi and this energy centre is open, our mind is clear and positive and we know what to do. When it’s closed then we feel negative and lack mental clarity so that no matter how much we overthink a situation, we can’t seem to find a solution. This is the first sign of stress.

3. Solar Plexus

The second energy centre is situated at the solar plexus and is responsible for our mind and emotions. When this centre is supported by Qi, our heart is open and we can share our love and embrace other people’s pain and problems. It also allows us to remain calm in difficult circumstances. When this energy centre is closed, instead of being able to give we feel we need to receive something. This creates all the different types of emotions – anger, fear, frustration, sadness, anxiety, you name it. What our system needs is Qi – energy.

3. Lower Abdomen (Danjeon)

If the spirit and mind energy centres are closed, they cannot support the third energy centre which lies in the abdomen below the navel and is responsible for the circulation of energy in the body and our physical health. When this is short of Qi or our system is blocked, then we feel tired and can develop pain and other physical issues. In order to open this energy centre it is very important to open up the energy system and replenish our Qi reserves.

Our mental health is affected by stress which usually begins in the mind and creates emotional turmoil and further stress. In time, it starts to manifest physically and mentally.

5 Simple Steps to Maintain Your Mental Health

Connect and talk –  don’t be afraid or uncomfortable to connect and talk to the people around you: your family, friends, colleagues and neighbours. It is healthy to talk about how you are feeling. The emotional support from others helps us to put things in perspective and helps us keep our mental health in check. Read our inspiring article about ‘Time to Talk’ day with mental health ambassador Leon McKenzie. Read the full article here

Be active – you don’t have to go to the gym. Take a walk, go cycling or play a game of football. Find an activity that you enjoy and make it a part of your life. Our energy classes help to circulate Qi energy and release physical and emotional stress and toxins.  Take a look at the energy classes Master Oh has on offer here

Take time for yourself and learn to say ‘no’ – Life is busy and it’s difficult to find time for ourselves. It is important to take just 10 minutes a day to switch off. Many people practise meditation to empty the mind of thoughts and find a moment of peace.  Click here to find out how meditation could help you

Give to others and be grateful – even the smallest act can count, whether it’s a smile, a thank you or a kind word. Larger acts, such as volunteering at your local community centre, can improve your mental wellbeing and help you build new social networks.  Learn to appreciate what you have. When we are filled with gratitude we naturally support the flow of Qi around our energy system, promoting good health.

Be mindful and practice meditation – be more aware of the present moment, including your thoughts and feelings, your body and the world around you. Some people call this awareness “mindfulness”. It can positively change the way you feel about life and how you approach challenges.

To support your mind begin and end your day with a gratitude meditation.
