How to sleep when you are stressed

There is nothing more frustrating than being unable to sleep – especially when you feel exhausted. All you need and long for is a night of restful sleep, to give you clarity and energy as well as to help you function well at work.

When you are stressed, you can often find yourself lying awake, worrying, making it more difficult to sleep. This in itself can become a source of stress. It feels like one is fuelling the other, however there is an underlying issue that impacts both stress and the inability to sleep. This is a shortage of energy, Qi energy.

What is Stress?

Qi energy is your life force energy, your vital energy. It is the energy that sustains and supports all life. A shortage of Qi makes it hard to manage emotions. This is the start of stress.

The first sign of stress is when you lack mental clarity and generally feel negative about things. When stressed, you may overthink a situation without being able to find a solution. You may find it hard to switch off as thoughts and emotions circulate around you head.

The second sign of stress is when your emotions overwhelm you. For example, you may struggle to remain calm in difficult situation. Your emotions may start to overwhelm you, such as – anger, fear, frustration, sadness, anxiety. This is a clear sign you are lacking in Qi energy.

The third sign of stress is when you start to feel physical symptoms such as extreme tiredness, pain and other issues such as digestion.

So how does this affect our ability to sleep?

We need Qi energy to sleep. The vibration of Qi is calm and peaceful. When we have a healthy circulation of Qi around the body we feel clam and our body can produce all the right hormones to enable sleep. Qi creates balance.

A shortage of Qi is often the root cause of insomnia and other sleep issues.  When we are short of Qi, we feel a sense of restlessness and the inability to switch off. Our body over compensates for the lack of Qi and produces too much fire energy, making it harder for us to switch off, preventing our body from finding peace and therefore sleep.

How do we re-energise?

First, you need to ascertain how stressed you are as this will indicate how low your Qi energy is and what the possible solutions are. Master Oh has a simple five-minute Stress Out test which will give you an idea of your energy levels, and what to do next.

Depending on your energy levels, before bedtime it is always good to practice quietening your mind. This may include a five- minute breathing meditation.

If you find meditating difficult and feel that your thoughts are over-whelming you, try Master Oh’s instant treatment which is a simple online treatment for insomnia. During this treatment you will receive vital Qi energy helping you to recharge your body and mind to prepare you for sleep.

Marco’s Story

In 2000, I was working long hours and evening shifts whilst studying in London. I was really run down and as I had saved enough money I decided to give up work to concentrate wholly on my degree. In the 2/3 weeks after finishing work, I was sleeping long hours every night which my body obviously needed and then all of a sudden one night I just stopped sleeping. From then on I was unable to sleep at all during the night, not even for one hour. This would last for 3 to 4 nights in a row until I would simply collapse and pass out for a few hours. As time went by the number of nights I wasn’t sleeping increased and the pattern got worse and worse until I became someone who simply did not sleep at all and I felt like I was slowly going mad. 5 Tips to Control the Effects of Stress and Lead a Happier Life

1. Try to start the day by smiling

One of the effects of stress is the feeling of dread when you first wake in the morning. Before you know it, it has increased in intensity and you are now beginning to feel anxious. To help with tackling this early morning stress, there is a simple yet effective trick.  After waking up, no matter how you feel, find the nearest mirror and smile.

It may sound strange but smiling has a very powerful impact on your emotional state and can change how you see the day ahead. What happens when you smile is that you stimulate muscle memory and release chemicals in the body that make you feel good. Your body remembers what you felt like when you smiled, so by forcing yourself to smile every morning, you are releasing chemicals that will automatically change your mood.

Also, smiling also has a powerful effect on other people. When you smile, a smile is likely to come back to you – not always – but more often than not.

2. Practise gratitude meditation

Of all our emotions, gratitude has the highest vibration. What this means is that the more grateful you are, the happier you become. Feeling overwhelmed and totally consumed by negative thoughts and emotions is often a symptom of being stressed – mentally and physically.

Begin and end each day with a five minute gratitude meditation. Start by focusing on your breath, then when you feel calm and peaceful, reflect on all the different things in your life that you are grateful for. This meditation helps you to realise how many things you can be grateful for.

Even when life feels challenging, be grateful. Each situation no matter how hard, teaches us something from which we can learn and grow. The more gratitude we have within us, the more peace and happiness we can find in our lives.

3. Do something for others

Often when you are stressed, you will be advised by others to make more ‘me time’.  Whilst it is said with the best intentions, one of the effects of stress is to spend time focusing on our problems and dwell on how they are making us feel. In this instance, more ‘me time’ often isn’t the best solution.

To really change we need to do the reverse and start thinking about others. When we make others happy we naturally become happier. This is the law of nature. Nature is constantly giving without expectation. When we follow this natural rhythm we become more peaceful and find greater happiness and meaning in our life.

4. Become aware of your thoughts and manage them

Stress and negative thoughts often go hand in hand, and this can be extremely damaging to our emotional and physical health. It is therefore essential to become aware of negative thought patterns and try to steer them in a different direction. Just like we can train our bodies to do things differently, we can also train our minds to think differently. It just takes practise.

The first step is always awareness. Try to observe your thoughts daily especially in stressful situations and see if your thoughts are helpful or destructive. Every time you have a negative thought, just say to yourself ‘unhelpful thought’.

Don’t allow your thoughts to go down a spiral of negativity. By stopping the continuation of negative thoughts they will slowly happen less frequently until you completely change the pattern of negative thinking.

5. Breathe

To become more peaceful, it is essential to get out of our busy head. We need to bring all our energy and focus away from our head and down into our body. Start by bringing all your focus and attention to the area just below your naval. This is a very important energy centre called the danjun. Whilst keeping your attention on this area you can start to breathe slowly, in through the nose and out through the nose.

Every time your mind gets distracted, bring your attention back to this area and your breath. You will find that after a few minutes your breath will naturally slow down and you will start to feel more calm and peaceful. When this happens you will be able to think more clearly and be able to make the right decisions. Focusing on your breath is a very powerful way to bring about calm, helping you to find a more peaceful state of being.

Stress – see how stressed you are

If you are worried about your stress levels and how to deal with life’s challenges, or just constantly worn out with the pressures of everyday life, don’t worry.  Take the ‘Stress OUT’ test to access simple solutions on how to manage stress.

Anxiety and Inherited Energy Patterns

We spoke about anxiety in our last blog, we looked into the causes and how Master Oh could help alleviate these feelings through his Energy Treatments.

In this blog, we continue with the theme of anxiety and look into the influence of inherited family patterns and how we can address this.

There has been an increasing interest in people researching their family history to see how their lives have been shaped by previous generations – something called epigenetics. We inherit our physical features through our genetic make-up, while our energy system holds the emotional patterns, memories, pain, health problems and even addictions from our ancestors.

These can be deeply imprinted and carried forward to future generations. It is not uncommon that major events or traumas in our lives have a similarity to events in our ancestors´ lives. This influence on us is what people in the East call karma.

What is Ancestor Healing?

Ancestor healing is a profound and spiritual course to clear our karma by healing the inherited energy patterns, thus clearing them from the root. Like a tree, if our roots are healthy – then the branches (us) and the fruit (our children) can blossom and thrive.  Just as we inherit positive aspects from our ancestors, we also inherit negative patterns. Clearing the ancestral karma frees you from these negative patterns so you can grow – without holding this ´weight´ from your family.

Many people may turn to therapy in an attempt to ease their anxiety and while they might feel an improvement, they may still suffer from many symptoms. Ancestor healing can often be the change people are looking for to heal their karma and family patterns.

The Cycle of Life

Life is the union of spirit, mind and body. Our spirit comes from the universe, our body from our parents and they come together as one – connected by the mind.

Death is the separation of spirit, mind and body, when our mind ceases to be the connection between the two. At this point our body goes back to the earth and our spirit and mind live on, with all the collective memories, habits, emotional attachments and desires we have created during our life. At the time of death, the brightness of our spirit is fixed depending on how we lived our lives. Our physical body is the vehicle through which we can brighten our spirit by practising a good-hearted, generous and compassionate mind. Therefore, it is only during life that we can change the brightness of our spirit.

When our physical existence comes to an end, our spirit lives on in the invisible world and has a duty to take care of future generations on Earth. Because family members share the same genes, their vibration is very similar and it is easy to connect to each other. This is why the state of our ancestors has a constant impact on our lives.

The Programme to clear your karma

Ancestor healing is a transformational programme which consists of one or four ceremonies over a four week period.

Master Oh leads the ceremonies, and during this period, supports you with energy treatments, advice and personal guidance. During each ceremony beautiful food, fruit, flowers and rice are offered to show respect and gratitude to the source of our lives, nature and our ancestors. Ancestors in turn receive energy and light to transform and become brighter. This can bring about profound changes for the whole family, as this new brightness is passed on to descendants.

Those who have completed ancestor healing often feel lighter, more positive, with a new feeling of clarity.  Many people report that their emotional and physical health problems have cleared and improved through ancestor healing – problems such as chronic fatigue, insomnia, depression and anxiety.

The thinking person’s meditation

What is the real purpose of meditation?

Emptying your mind of thought is not the purpose of meditation. The real purpose of meditation is self-reflection, which leads to self-discovery, which leads to self-realisation.

This process of self-realisation not only releases emotional blockages in the body, which are the precursors to disease, but also connects us with a deeper reality.

Our lives are very busy and the pace of life is fast. There is little time to think and reflect. For many of us, we have lost the connection with ourselves, our reactions and understanding how we feel.

Meditation understands and corrects the mind that created any imbalance

The purpose of meditation is to observe our minds, to understand what we do, why we do it and how to correct it. The mind can often work independently of time.

For example, when we think about a stressful past event, the body can start to produce stress chemicals such as adrenaline and cortisol as if it occurred yesterday.

Re-visit past mistakes

Looking back at past mistakes, not in condemnation or blame, but to understand what we did or what others did to us (it is immaterial whether it comes from us or others, the mind responds the same way), is an important process to bring the mind to a state of balance.

Energy blockages are usually caused by our emotions. The mind creates them, the mind undoes them. As we reflect on ourselves and correct our minds, less repetition takes place. Many people talk of a repetitive pattern in their lives; this is because the mind is never corrected.

Achieve true balance

It is a simple process, but difficult to achieve as we don’t like to face our ‘faults’. For many years, we have been hard wired to deny or suppress our least attractive traits. It drives us deeper into ourselves and we try to suppress it. However, the true balancing act is to reduce what is plentiful and increase what is lacking. In other words, rather than suppress our least attractive traits, we should make the opposite stronger. For selfishness, balance with giving; for arrogance, practise humility; for anger, practise calmness or humour.

As the mind is corrected, the body is healed.
